Ask me about:
Crop Improvement, Product Development, Novel System Designs

Having spent the last 20+ years working at HARC to help the organization through a transition from sugarcane research to diversified agriculture, I value opportunities to contribute to the local and global tropical agriculture research ecosystem. My experience in Hawaii and around the globe has highlighted the challenges facing tropical agricultural production as economic, cultural and environmental conditions change.  I remain optimistic that with investment and partnerships with the private sector and international research institutions, tropical agriculture can play a driving force in improving people’s lives. While my primary scientific research contributions have centered around crop improvement in Hawaii, East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, I also enjoy working with researchers on a range of topics.  My work with the private sector includes:
  • germplasm conservation for multinational corporations
  • variety development and selection for startup farmers in Hawaii
  • developing Agrivoltaic systems suitable for utility scale Photovoltaic
  • efficacy testing of new crop protection products
  • international germplasm transfer and IP protection
I strongly believe that Hawaii’s contribution to tropical agriculture can extend far beyond food production by leveraging Hawaii’s skilled work force, political stability, modern infrastructure and strong intellectual property protections to develop and test new technologies for the global tropics.
