Sustainable Forestry

HARC Forestry Department vision for Hawaiʻi's native forestry is to build an industry that is sustainable, provides for economic development through value-added products, enriches the community by creating new jobs, and enhances the environment through sound conservation practices.

PATHOGEN DETECTION AND RESEARCH

SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT

ENHANCED TREE GENETICS AND IMPROVEMENTS

Current research led by Nicklos Dudley advances Hawaiʻi's forestry and conservation community needs by leading the following efforts:

Acacia koa wilt resistance

Over 30 years of screening resistant, tolerant or susceptibility across Hawaiʻi Islands

Koaiʻa Restoration

Restoring koaiʻa dentification and propagation of koaiʻa populations resilient to diseases.

ʻIliahi Research

Exploring variations in ʻiliahi oil production across the Hawaiian Islands.

Rapid ʻōhiʻa death

Investigating natural resistance within will ʻōhiʻa populations.
HARC Sustainable Forestry program restores native Hawaiian forests using keystone species. By replacing invasive plants with native species on degraded pasture and agricultural lands, the project aims to improve water infiltration, fog capture, and aquifer recharge.

These projects establish region-specific, disease-resistant demonstration plantings to support long-term forest and watershed resilience.
