Current Research 

Coordinates research projects with potential for intellectual property development and commercialization. Initiated new Botanics Department, specializing in botanical extraction method development. Developed HPLC methodology (proprietary) for analyzing kava, shampoo ginger and other gingers. Set up contract service for kava and stevia growers to obtain analyses at cost. Supervises, conducts, and reports on chemical research on substances important to the agricultural industry. Adapts or develops and evaluates analytical methodology for crop protection chemicals to be used on crops in Hawaii and elsewhere. Supervises and coordinates any field-related and/or lab.-related activities. Consults with growers to evaluate the use of chemicals. Provides analytical services interdepartmentally, for chemical manufacturers, Interregional Project No. 4, and other sponsors. Develops and implements methodology for crop protection chemical metabolism studies. Coordinates station involvement in minor crop pesticide registration activities. Involved in environmental projects including leaching studies, monitoring of water quality and movement of crop protection chemicals away from target areas. Implements radiation safety policies and reviews protocols for all field and lab. related radioisotope use.
