Seeds 4 Tomorrow 2016 - From Plants to Products!
Day 1: Sustainable Agriculture and Conservation
We will kick off our camp with an introduction to the fundamentals of sustainable agriculture. Students will learn about their ahupuaʻa (watershed) and how we can care for the ecosystem services they provide.
Day 2: Research, Cultivation and Agroforestry
Agriculture professionals will teach students common propagation techniques used in agriculture such as cuttings, graft and tissue culture. students will learn about plant genetics and genetic markers to differentiate DNA between plant cultivar which might have differences in flavor, yield and disease resistance.
Day 3: Plants to Products
Many of the products we use everyday come from plants. Students will have the chance to take raw plant material and process it into various products such as chocolate, coffee, cotton and natural plant dyes.
Day 4: Farm to Table
Students will visit several farms located onsite at Kunia to learn about traditional and innovative agriculture types being used, such as aquaponics. They will also meet with culinary arts professionals to make healthy snacks with local, farm fresh ingredients.
Day 5: Young Agriprenuer Day
The next generation of agriculturalists in Hawaii will be producing food and products though innovation and rapidly changing technology. On this day we will introduce students to agricultural business entrepreneurship, and support them as they develop their own business and products using the tools they have learned throughout the week.
Day 6: Business Competition
The culmination of our week. Our Saturday event is sure to be the most exciting day of the camp as our students become young "Agriprenuers" and present their focused businesses to their peers, parents and other farmers! We highly encourage students to invite their friends and family to this fun event!
